WASHINGTON — New details are emerging in the mysterious killing of a lawyer found dead in an upscale downtown D.C. hotel Feb. 9.

A search warrant says David Messerschmitt was stabbed several times in the back. He was found face down on the floor of his room at the Donovan Hotel with his wallet next to his head and various credit cards around him. There was blood on the walls, door and floor.

Police also found lubricant, a condom, a computer, Messerschmitt’s cellphone and other items. It has been previously reported that Messerschmitt’s wife received a text from his phone about two hours after he was last seen saying he would be home in about an hour.

Police have released pictures and video of a person of interest in the case but have not said what they suspect is the motive in the killing.

The Metropolitan Police Department says Messerschmitt was reported missing about 24 hours before he was found dead Tuesday morning.

Messerschmitt, a native of Cincinnati, worked for DLA Piper for less than a year as a technology and commercial transactions attorney.
