Closures remain on Rock Creek Parkway after debris falls from bridge

WASHINGTON –  Lane closures will remain in both directions of Rock Creek Parkway between P Street and Virginia Avenue after debris fell from the Pennsylvania Avenue bridge overnight.

The the single lane closures will remain except for a period between 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. when two northbound lanes will be maintained. After the rush, single lane closures will return.

U.S. Park Police Lt. Allan Griffith says a passing driver reported debris on the road about 1 a.m. Tuesday. Griffith says the debris clearly came from the Pennsylvania Avenue overpass.

Structural engineers were assessing the bridge and overpass Tuesday morning. It was unclear how long the inspection and related closures would last.

This is the most recent case of falling debris causing issues on local roads. In February, a chunk of concrete from a Beltway overpass fell onto a car on Suitland Road. The driver was not hurt.

That incident prompted emergency inspections of dozens of Maryland bridges. Many required immediate maintenance to remove loose concrete.
