WASHINGTON — Metro has scheduled a public hearing to take comments on the transit authority’s proposed fare hikes and service cuts.
Metro is suggesting fare hikes of 10 cents on Metrorail and Metrobus. The off-peak base fare on Metrorail would rise from $1.75 to $1.85.
Although bus ridership is up, Metro is proposing a variety of service cutbacks in D.C., Maryland and Virginia. Some bus routes with little ridership would be eliminated; some routes would be trimmed.
For example, Pennsylvania Avenue (Route 34) would have no service on evenings and weekends. But overlapping service is available on Routes 32, 36 and others, Metro says.
Evening service on Route B31, Crofton to New Carrollton, would be eliminated, but some coverage would be provided by B24 and B25 buses.
All Sunday service would be eliminated on the 2T line from Tysons Corner to Dunn Loring. The Fairfax Connector would provide service instead.
Metro is also proposing to extend the collection hours at Metro parking garages by an hour in the morning and evening to generate additional revenue.
The public hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at Metro headquarters, at 600 5th Street NW. If you want to comment, but can’t make it to the hearing, you can submit a response to the proposal on the WMATA website.
