Marriott International Inc.’s Bill Marriott will step down from his executive chairman and chairman of the board role in 2022, CEO Arne Sorenson confirmed to investors during a Monday earnings call.
At that time, Bill Marriott, 88, will assume the title of chair emeritus. His son, David Marriott, plans to step down from his role as president of the company’s U.S. operations for Managed by Marriott, a collective of 320 full-service managed hotels. The younger Marriott is expected to join the company’s board next year and, eventually, rise to chairman.
“David is well-suited to serve on our board and I know he will bring not only his operations and sales experience but also his deep understanding of Marriott’s culture to board-level conversation and decision-making,” Sorenson said during the Monday call with analysts. “I look forward to working with David as a director and then chair for many years to come.”
