WASHINGTON — Low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines just launched its first international flights from BWI Marshall Airport. Destination: Cancun, Mexico.
Spirit did not announce fare prices for the new BWI-to-Cancun route, but a check of the Spirit website finds one-way fares in the first week of December as low as $94.
Spirit also added nonstop service to Cancun from Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. It already serves Cancun from Dallas/Fort Worth, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale and Houston.
“We welcome the announcement that Spirit Airlines will bring new international flight options and more ultralow fares for our travelers,” said Ricky Smith, BWI Marshall Airport chief executive.
“This service boosts the travel value for our passengers, while adding to the growth and success here at BWI Marshall Airport,” he said.
Spirit said Cancun is one of its most-requested destinations.
It is the latest addition to BWI Marshall’s growing roster of international flights.
Domestic flights make up the majority of destinations from BWI Marshall, but last year was the second straight year the airport had more than 1 million international passengers.
BWI Marshall is the Washington region’s busiest airport, and had a record 25.1 million passengers in 2016, with nonstop service to about 90 domestic and international destinations.
