Amtrak hops on Black Friday train with travel discounts

WASHINGTON — For the first time in its history, Amtrak is jumping into the Black Friday fray and will offer “Track Friday” sales on winter and spring rail trips.

Discounts start on Friday and run through Cyber Monday, Nov. 28. Amtrak said customers can save up to 30 percent on tickets for trips between Dec. 10 and April 9. The discounts offered cover the Amtrak network nationwide including the popular Northeast Corridor.

Some sample fares from Union Station in D.C. include $45 tickets to New York City and $29 tickets to Philadelphia.

Prices are one-way coach fares, and some blackout dates apply.

The holiday travel season is a busy one for Amtrak.

The public railway said that the Thanksgiving holiday is its busiest time of the year. Last year, Amtrak carried almost 752,000 passengers during the Thanksgiving travel period, about a third of those rode along the Northeast Corridor. It expects similar travel volumes this year.

On the Northeast Corridor, Amtrak, Acela Express and Northeast Regional services will operate on an extended schedule with additional frequencies and added capacity between D.C. and Boston over the Thanksgiving travel period.
