WASHINGTON — A woman says she was raped in the Shirlington neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia, Thursday evening and police say the suspect has not been caught.

Arlington County police are still searching for the suspect of the assault they say happened near the intersection of South Randolph and 31st streets. That intersection is not too far from Campbell Avenue, a popular Shirlington hot spot lined with restaurants and cafes.

Police say the victim was putting things into her car around 10:40 p.m. Thursday, when a man she didn’t recognize came up behind her and sexually assaulted her.

They say he then ran off and she called 911. Police describe the suspect as a thin black man in his late 20s, anywhere between 5 feet 6 inches to 6 feet tall. He was wearing a white T-shirt at the time of the assault.

Arlington police spokeswoman Ashley Savage says detectives continue collecting and reviewing evidence in the case. Police are asking anyone with details surrounding the case to contact Arlington County Crime Solvers at 866-411-TIPS (8477).
