ARLINGTON, Va. — Standing tall before the gravestone, a cub scout read the inscription, placed a long-stem rose on the ground, then moved on to the next grave.
Cub scouts are among the volunteers fanning out across Arlington National Cemetery this weekend, placing more than 100,000 roses at the graves.
“They died for our country and they helped us all,” says 11-year-old cub scout Chris With, of Reston.
The Memorial Day Flowers Foundation is behind the effort to decorate graves at Arlington with red, white and yellow roses. The flowers are donated. There are roses available at 200 flower shops across the U.S., for those who want to place one at a hero’s grave.
Using Thunderclap, supporters can post virtual roses on social media this Monday.
