The pellet gun confiscated by police is similar to a BB gun but appears much like a 9mm or 40 caliber handgun. "It looks real. And it was enough to put him [the victim] in fear," says Anne Arundel County Police Lieutenant T.J. Smith.

WASHINGTON — An alleged case of road rage involving a child passenger and a lethal-looking pellet gun has landed a Glen Burnie man behind bars.

The pellet gun confiscated by police is similar to a BB gun but appears much like a 9mm or 40 caliber handgun.

“It looks real. And it was enough to put him [the victim] in fear,” says Anne Arundel County Police Lieutenant T.J. Smith.

31-year-old Raymond Nolan is charged with two counts of second-degree assault, disorderly conduct and having a controlled dangerous substance — narcotic pain killers.

Police say the incident started on Quarterfield Road in the Glen Burnie/Severn area about 5:30 p.m., April 15, when Nolan pointed the gun at a car with a child passenger and a driver with whom he was having a traffic dispute.

“The victim did what I would call a responsible thing. He got a description of the vehicle, description of the person, called 911, and followed the person,” Smith says.

When Nolan was arrested in the Wawa Store parking lot at 7699 Quarterfield Road, police say they found a black handgun on his car’s front seat. Police also found a small amount of marijuana on Nolan as well.

Smith says the arrest and traffic dispute all could have been avoided if each of the drivers had just taken a deep breath and shaken off a perceived offense before the incident escalated.

“Everybody, practice a little patience and it can go a long way. Now somebody’s in jail facing serious charges because they didn’t have patience,” Smith says.

Smith also observes that at least this case of road rage ended without someone being hurt or killed.
