Va. shelter takes in NC dogs after hurricane, waives adoption fees

WASHINGTON — In the wake of Hurricane Matthew, dogs from overcrowded shelters in North Carolina are being sent to Virginia, and that means a local animal shelter is waiving all dog adoption fees for the next two weeks.

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria  took in six of the 86 dogs that came from storm-ravaged North Carolina and is inviting the community to join in on the relief efforts. The shelter has waived all adoption fees for dogs through 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, as part of its “Storm Surge” adoption event.

The dogs from North Carolina will undergo evaluations and testing before they can be adopted out, AWLA said in a news release. These dogs were already waiting to be adopted when the hurricane hit.

The AWLA also put out a call for families or individuals to temporarily house dogs. Fosters are urgently needed to help get the shelter through this overcrowding crisis with the influx of the new dogs. Anyone considering being a dog foster parent can contact fosters@AlexandriaAnimals.org.

The AWLA shelter is located at 4101 Eisenhower Ave. in Alexandria. More details are available at AWLA’s website.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated in order to provide the correct the number of dogs being taken in at the shelter in Alexandria, Virginia. The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is taking in six dogs.
