WASHINGTON — Three Metro Transit Police officers were hurt in a chain reaction crash on I-395 overnight.
According to the Metro Transit Chief, the officers were responding to an emergency call with lights and sirens on. The crash happened northbound on I-395 near Seminary Road around 11 p.m. Saturday.
Virginia State Police say a Toyota Camry suddenly slowed in the travel lane, leading the three police cars to swerve and crash.
The first of the three Metro Transit Police vehicles immediately slowed to avoid the Toyota. The second police vehicle swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid the first police vehicle, but ended up sideswiping the first police vehicle. The impact of that crash caused the second police vehicle to strike the Camry. Then third police vehicle then struck the second police vehicle and then continuing on into the Jersey wall.
All officers have been treated for their injuries and released from George Washington University Hospital Sunday morning.
The driver of the Toyota, Mary H. Daniel of Woodbridge, was transported to Inova Alexandria Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Daniel was charged with stopping in a highway.
The crash remains under investigation.
