WASHINGTON — Fairfax County detectives have identified one of the drivers involved in a fatal crash that occurred Tuesday.

Antonio A. Badie, 28, was behind the wheel when he and another man crashed into a house in Alexandria. The passenger has been identified, but next of kin hasn’t been notified, police say.

Fairfax County police say the crash happened around 8 p.m. along Smithway Drive, near Beacon Hill Road. The car failed to navigate a sharp curve on Beacon Hill Road and plowed through a front yard, taking out a wooden fence, then plowed through a fire hydrant and crossed Smithway Drive before slamming into the picture window of the house at 6801 Smithway Drive. It came to rest four feet off the ground and at a 40-degree angle.

Badie died at a hospital; the 27-year-old passenger was pronounced dead on the scene, Fairfax County police say.

The police add that the  car had been reported stolen from Falls Church. Detectives believe the car was going east in the westbound lane and the driver overcorrected when a car was heading toward him. Police believe that speed was a factor, and are investigating whether drugs and alcohol were involved.

Dave Kawber, who lives in the neighborhood, says that drivers frequently violate the 35 mph speed limit. “This is a road that they use to get from the Beltway to Route 1 or from Route 1 back to the Beltway — it’s a cut-through street. … They need some speed bumps here.”

The police say the family was in church Tuesday night. “It’s extremely fortunate, and some might say a miracle, that they weren’t there at the time,” police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell says.
