RICHMOND, Va. — Jay Gruden made it clear coming into camp that the starting quarterback position was Robert Griffin III’s to lose. He named the fourth-year quarterback the starter in the offseason with the role of backup to be decided between Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy.
All three quarterbacks saw time as the starter last year and all want that job back. But they aren’t letting any quarterback competition distract them.
“We’re not really focused on that right now,” McCoy said. “For me, I’m just coming out here taking advantage of the reps I do get and learning from the reps I don’t get. I’m really just focused on my job and what I can do to get better each day.”
McCoy did make it clear, however, what the ultimate goal is.
“We all want to play. I want to be the best I can be for our team, in whatever that role is. Certainly trying to compete every day and, like I said, take advantage of the reps I do get.”
All three quarterbacks have benefited from having a quarterbacks coach. Matt Cavanaugh has been added to the staff this year and has been a good addition, according to McCoy.
“Having him in the room has added more time for Sean (McVay) to really game plan and do his thing as an offensive coordinator,” McCoy said. ” He’s an experienced guy. He’s been around the league a long time. He played. He’s definitely been an upgrade for us.”
Cavanaugh played in the league for 13 years and has been coaching since 1992.
Expect the battle for the backup spot to last throughout the entire camp.
