Redskins Year In Review

Jan. 9: Jay Gruden hired George Wallace: I always wanted a Gruden; I thought it would be Jon Gruden. Jay made sense after the coaching tree that Bruce Allen put together — it was obvious he was his first and only choice. Rob Woodfork: My thoughts at the time match my thoughts now — meh. April 2: Free agent WR DeSean Jackson signed GW: Champs of the offseason — signing DeSean Jackson. RW: Low-cost/high-reward signing that actually paid off. Noah Frank: Washington was the beneficiary of a bad situation in Philly. I’ve loved Jackson ever since watching him wreck the then-PAC 10 with Cal. (AP Photo/AJ Mast)
May 22: Letter from more than 50 Senators telling team to change name GW: Again, Bruce Allen was forced to spend his time as general manager defending the team name instead of building a roster. Not good at all. RW: To me, these are all just small footnotes. Snyder’s not changing the name until his wallet starts to hurt — and it doesn’t. NF: It may have been for show, but baseball didn’t take its most substantive action on performance enhancing drugs until Congress got involved. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)
May 29: #RedskinsPride Twitter campaign GW: See above. RW: Epic. Fail. NF: To me, this was right in line with the Ravens posting a letter in support of Ray Rice on their website before all the facts of his case were in. There’s a reason a lot of teams have outside PR consultants –- to avoid missteps on major issues. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)
Jun. 10: Anti-Redskins ad airs during NBA Finals RW: Again: It’s all white noise to me until Snyder is forced to change the name. NF: No matter which side you stand on, this was a powerful ad. I don’t know that it changed anyone’s mind, but I thought it was the best presentation of that side of the issue I’ve seen so far. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)
Jun. 18: Patent and Trademark Office strips protection RW: Ditto. NF: I’m still waiting to see whether this one will hold up. (AP Photo/Sharon Ellman)
Sep. 9: Etsy bans logo from website RW: What’s Etsy again? NF: Interesting gesture, but I doubt many football fans noticed. (Etsy.com)
Sep. 14: RG3 gets hurt again; Kirk Cousins soars to victory RW: Well … at the time, I thought it was the start of something good. Apparently, my 2014 prognosticator is broken. GW: The carousel starts; Gruden got his chance to see what Cousins can do. He had 5 games; he’s not the answer. (AP Photo/Nick Wass)
Sep. 24: South Park season premiere rips team name RW: The Skins have been an NFL punchline for years. It was only a matter of time before they became comedic fodder too, right? NF: The funniest part of the whole thing was the last-minute replacement of Kirk Cousins for RG3 (who had appeared in the preview) in the actual episode. Whether or not you agree with Trey Parker and Matt Stone, at least they know their football. (AP Photo/Nick Wass)
Sep. 25: Anti-Redskins ‘Daily Show’ episode airs GW: Everyone continues to make fun of the dysfunctional situation. RW: Regardless of how you feel about the team name, this was funny. NF: I wish they had shown some of the vitriol they later reported having dealt with at the stadium. (AP Photo/Nick Wass)
Oct. 12: Kirk Cousins melts down vs. Arizona, is not the answer at QB GW: Gruden has seen enough of Cousins. He throws to the other team too much; you don’t want that. RW: This is where the season was lost. (AP Photo/Rick Scuteri)
Oct. 27: Colt McCoy, ‘Skins beat Cowboys in Dallas/“No means no” GW: McCoy is the savior in Dallas — let’s not go crazy. Dallas was coming off big wins and snapped their winning streak. They definitely took this Redskins team lightly. Then, a PR fiasco at the end of the game for the entire nation to see. RW: Great win, and even better Vine from Tony Wyllie. NF: As a former PR guy, I felt bad for Tony. I’ve heard much worse dropped by reporters and team officials alike, out of range of the cameras. (AP Photo/Rick Scuteri)
Nov. 3: Bus crash, tough loss, protest in Minnesota RW: There is no sequence of events in a single week that better encapsulates the Redskins’ 2014 season. NF: I was already planning to keep an eye on this game because of the protest, but the drama began before I even woke up for this one. (AP Photo/Ann Heisenfelt)

Nov. 16: Ticket prices crash under $10 online GW: Only way it’s going to hit Snyder is if the stadium is empty. He hates it. Also, the last two weeks have basically been road games for his team. RW: Rock bottom is Skins fans paying more for one of RG3’s foot-long Subway sandwiches than tickets to see RG3 play — and totally getting their money’s worth. (AP Photo/Mark Tenally)
Dec. 7: Moss ejected; Redskins lose to Giants GW: I’ve loved Santana from Day 1; he’s the definition of a team guy. Great locker-room guy as well. I have no problem with him doing what he did. RW: I know these guys are pros and have to keep their cool no matter what, but that was the worst officiated NFL game I’ve witnessed all year. I would’ve been tossed too. NF: The play that preceded the ejection — with RG3 losing the ball on the way into the end zone — was the peak frustration point in the season. The worst part? It wasn’t even a bad call, just an especially brutal one. (AP Photo/Bill Kostroun)
Dec. 14: London Fletcher rips Jim Haslett/Rams troll Skins GW: Fletcher thinks it’s Pro Bowl time again and he needs to start talking again. He was so classless to do it this way. Meanwhile, I loved the captains at midfield for Jeff Fisher. Remember — Fisher is Shanahan’s buddy and Brian Schottenheimer is on the Rams coaching staff as well. RW: Let’s be honest here: The Fletcher barbs and the Jeff Fisher dig said more about them than it did the Redskins. But the ‘Skins have earned much of the ridicule coming their way. (AP Photo/Nick Wass)
Dec. 20: Bar holds wake/Redskins beat Eagles, knock out them out of playoffs RW: The Redskins can’t even win right. Losing to Philly then knocking off Dallas would’ve helped give the division to the lesser of the two evils. NF: The wake was pretty inspired, and evidently it worked. Maybe a new tradition has been born? (AP Images/Mark Tenally)
