Final hearings on I-395 express lane extension are this week

WASHINGTON — The final two public hearings on a northern extension of the Interstate 395 express lanes are set for this week.

Residents can comment on the design plans and environmental assessment of the project, which will extend the lanes by 8 miles, ending near the D.C. line. The express lanes currently end near Edsall Road, where they turn into HOV lanes.

The first hearing is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bren Mar Park Elementary School, 6344 Beryl Road in Alexandria. The second hearing is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Lee High School, 6540 Franconia Road in Springfield.

For those who can’t attend the hearings, public comments and input can still be sent to VDOT until the close of business on Dec. 12. Send an email with the subject line “I-395 Express Lanes Northern Extension,” or physical mail addressed to Amanda Baxter, Virginia Department of Transportation, 4975 Alliance Drive, Fairfax, VA 22030.

Construction on the extension project is expected to start in the spring of 2017 and is expected to wrap up by 2019.
