WASHINGTON — In Roanoke, Virginia, it pays to be polite — at least that’s what customers at CUPS Coffee & Tea seem to be banking on.
The coffee shop’s latest promotion is basing the price of their coffee on how polite you are when you ask for it. Simply requesting “one small coffee” means your cup of Joe will carry a $5 price tag — add the word “please” and you’ll pay $3.
If you want to best deal, say, “hello, I’d like one small coffee please.” That will bring the price down to $1.75.
An employee at the shop tells a local CBS affiliate WDBJ7 that it started off as a joke. The coffee shop worker said a sign advertising this promo was posted outside the coffee shop last week. Soon after, a photo of the sign made its way to Reddit, and, from there, made the rounds on social media.
The promo has since gone viral, even grabbing headlines on the other side of the Atlantic.
