The cheapest times of year to visit the world’s best vacation spots

It’s cheaper to get to Las Vegas in January and early February, Kiplinger Personal Finance says. Rooms average $66, and airfares fall about 25 percent. Do make sure that no big conventions are in town, because that can be a game-changer. (AP Photo/John Locher, File)

It gets cold in London in January, but it’s the cheapest time. With winter in full swing, hotels drop rates to an average of $129 per night and airfares drop about 30 percent, Kiplinger Personal Finance says. The next best bet? Late summer. (Peter Macdiarmid/Getty Images)
Winter is the right time to head to Paris, with February leading the pack. Flights are at their lowest, $498 less on average than in July. Room rates are also at their low point, though Henrik Kjellberg, of The Hotwire Group, tells Kiplinger Personal Finance that hotels stay relatively cheap through May. (AP Photo/Remy de la Mauviniere)
In Honolulu, on the other hand, May is the cheapest month to visit, with airfares down 31 percent and room rates down 46 percent. You’ll want to avoid the holidays and summer, but prices are still not bad from September through November. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)
The best month to visit New York is in February, with average airfares down 21 percent, and room rates at their lowest. Kiplinger Personal Finance adds that fares aren’t bad in January or September either, and rooms can be less on weekends, when business travelers tend to clear out. (AP Photo/Mark Lennihan, File)

January is the cheapest time to visit Rome. It’s by far the most affordable time to book a room (although it’s pretty cheap through spring), and flights are an average of 30 percent cheaper. And it may be winter, but Kiplinger Personal Finance says the average temperature is still a tolerable 53 degrees. (Thinkstock)

In Madrid, the attractions are open year-round, but many of the businesses close up for the entire month of August. That means low airfares and cheap hotel rooms. (Thinkstock)

January is also the cheapest month to visit San Francisco, Kiplinger Personal Finance says. Rooms go for an average of $116 a night, and you’ll save an average of about $100 on your flight. September’s not bad either, but December is the most expensive month for airfare. (AP Photo/Eric Risberg)

You can combine that San Francisco trip with a visit to Los Angeles in January as well — hotels go for an average of $99 a night, and airfares are the cheapest they’ll get all year. But check summer prices too, Kiplinger Personal Finance says — if you’re flexible, you could snag a deal then too. (AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill)
