Prince William Co. leaders clash over snow-related school closures

WASHINGTON — Two leaders in Prince William County, Virginia have sharply different opinions on school closures caused by the blizzard of 2016, and now the fallout has spilled out onto social media.

Prince William County Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart, a Republican, called out the county’s school system for closing the schools for the entire week last week.

In an interview with NewsChannel 8, Stewart said the school system’s response was “ridiculous” because the roads were passable and blamed closures on a society that’s too risk averse. The story was later picked up by WMAL.

Firing back, Ryan Sawyers, the county’s newly installed school board chairman, said in a Facebook post that Stewart failed to fund the school system and is more concerned about campaigning for himself. Sawyers, a Democrat, said that he was impressed Stewart even noticed it snowed.

“Considering how much time Chairman Stewart is spending running statewide campaigns for himself and Donald Trump I am pleasantly surprised to hear that Mr. Stewart was even aware that it snowed in Prince William County over the weekend,” the Facebook post read.

Stewart has been tapped to be the Virginia chairman of Donald Trump’s campaign to earn the Republican bid for presidency; Stewart could also be jumping in the 2017 Virginia governor’s race.
