Police: Trooper, pedestrian struck by impaired driver in Md.

WASHINGTON — A Maryland state trooper and a pedestrian were hurt after being struck by a driver in Prince George’s County on Sunday.

The driver, Chris M. Dent, 37, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence. Police said more charges would be filed.

Dent was not injured in the crash, state police said in a news release.

The state trooper, Solomon Flash, was released from the hospital on Sunday morning. The pedestrian, Anthony C. Owelle 28, Laurel, Maryland, was still in the hospital as of Sunday afternoon.

The crash happened at around 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

The state trooper was investigating a crash on northbound Maryland Route 4 at Presidential Parkway.

He used his patrol car, with its emergency lights activated, to block one lane of the highway while protecting a disabled vehicle that was still in the roadway. Owelle had been involved in that crash and was standing near the guardrail.

As they waited for a tow truck, Dent struck the back of the state police patrol car then skidded off the road way and struck Owelle.

Police said that troopers investigating the crash noticed Dent exhibiting signs of being under the influence. Further investigation led to his arrest.
