Prince George’s Co. playground fire spotted around region

WASHINGTON — Fire destroyed the playground at an Oxon Hill apartment complex Thursday, sending dark smoke above the border between Maryland and the District.

Witnesses told investigators they saw two young people running away from playground just after the fire started.

Mark Brady, the spokesman for Prince George’s County Fire Department, calls it “suspicious” at this point. The Office of the Fire Marshall is investigating.

The fire started about 3:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of Southern Avenue, a short distance from the Southern Avenue Metro station.

Drivers from across the region — including from Virginia — called to report dark smoke rising from the scene.

“Slides, swings, jungle gym-type equipment were made of the heavy duty type plastic,” Brady says.

Investigators estimate the fire caused $10,000 in damage. No one was hurt.
