Md. highway officials asked to check intersection’s safety after fatal crash

WASHINGTON — The Maryland State Highway Administration is being asked to give a Laurel intersection a safety check following a deadly crash Thursday night.

Laurel Mayor Craig Moe said the accident on Route 198 at Brock Bridge Road near Route 197 is one of several killer crashes that have happened in the same spot in recent years.

“The intersection is maintained by the state. We’ve asked them to come in and take a look at it, and see if there’s [sic] ways that it might be improved,” Moe said.

Thursday’s crash happened around 6:15 p.m. and involved a tour bus and a pickup truck.

Audrey Barnes with the City of Laurel said it looks like the bus was attempting to make a left turn into a shopping plaza when it collided with the truck.

The truck’s driver, 45-year-old Michael Palomo of Silver Spring, died at the scene.

Fifty-eight people were on the bus, and seven were taken to a hospital after complaining of minor injuries.

Barnes said the bus was headed to Niagara Falls.

The crash investigation continues, and Barnes is asking anyone who saw it happen to call police at 301-498-0092.
