Dozens displaced in Prince George’s County apartment fire

WASHINGTON – A fire in a Suitland apartment building displaced dozens of residents, and fire authorities say a boy under 10 started it with a lighter.

The Prince George’s County Fire Department says it happened at about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday on Southern Avenue.

The apartment building where the fire started and an attached building have 11 apartments each, with about 50 people total living in them, the fire department says. The occupants of the building where the fire started were displaced, because the electricity and gas were cut off.

Management at the complex is working with the County’s Citizens Services Unit and the American Red Cross to assist the displaced folks.

Damage from the blaze was estimated at $50,000.

No one was hurt.
