D.C. gelato maker Dolcezza is gearing up for a busy summer — and not just because of all the people looking to beat the heat with frozen treats.
The company will open its sixth location Saturday at one of the busiest corners in the city’s popular Logan Circle neighborhood, at 14th and P streets NW.
Next week, they’ll celebrate their 10th anniversary with a free cone giveaway at all of their locations. Later in July, Dolcezza’s e-commerce site will launch, allowing the store to ship gelato in four-pint packages to customers around the country.
And more could be in store for that 14th and P location, which has an old-school, creepy basement that co-owner Robb Duncan thinks would be great for some kind of speakeasy-style bar.
“It’s got these rounded ceilings and these walled off tunnels from when deliveries used to come in under the street,” Duncan said. But he doesn’t want to get ahead of himself; first they need to get the gelato shop upstairs open.
With health department approval obtained, that should happen Saturday. And with the gorgeous weather expected for the weekend, the Dolcezza team may have lines of Georgetown Cupcake proportions on their hands.
But it’s all relative. At 1,000 square feet and 30 seats altogether once the patio is ready, it’s bigger than Dolcezza’s other stores — except the factory in Northeast D.C., shown in the video above — said Farrah Skeiky, the company’s events coordinator.
“We’re going to be open ’til 11 most nights, so we’re expecting a lot of traffic,” she said.
The shop, which will also serve coffee, pastries and basic frozen desserts through the window on 14th Street, may implement a no-Wi-Fi-on-the-weekends policy to keep customer flow going, she said.
