WASHINGTON – The threat of dog flu in Montgomery County forced the cancellation of Doggie Dig Day at the Rockville Swim and Fitness Center on Saturday, Sept. 14.
As a precaution, the Rockville City Police Department, which oversees the city’s animal control division, canceled the annual event where pooches romp and splash in the pool.
“It is unfortunate that the City has had to cancel the event. However, the well- being of our canine residents is paramount,” said Lt. Eric Over, in a news release.
Two dogs died of canine influenza recently, prompting Montgomery County Parks to warn dog owners about the problem.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the contagious respiratory disease was originally an equine flu that can now spread among dogs.
While the dog flu is not a threat to people, Over urges owners to watch for the signs of it in their pets:
The swim center says it hopes to hold Doggie Dig Day next September.
