Police investigate attempted rape in Silver Spring

WASHINGTON – A 20-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in Silver Spring on Wednesday night, according to a Montgomery County police.

The woman was on the 1400 block of Hamphshire Court West around 11:15 p.m. when she was approached by the suspect, police say. The man tried to solicit sex from her, and when she refused he pushed her into a wall and assaulted her.

Police say the woman was able to get away from the man and tried to run away, but the man forced her to the ground and attempted to rape her.

“The victim yelled and kicked the suspect off of her and the suspect fled the area,” said Officer Nicole Gamard with Montgomery County police.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic man, about 5-foot-8, and 170 pounds. He’s in his late 20s or early 30s with no facial hair. Police say he was last seen wearing a furry hat, black jacket and gray pants.

Police say they believe the same man was involved in an earlier indecent exposure incident. In that instance, police say the suspect approached a 36-year-old woman, attempted to solicit her for sex.

“When she refused, he pulled down his pants and exposed his genitals to her,” Gamard said.

Investigators have been in the area looking for witnesses. Gamard says they are also asking for anyone who might know the suspect, to give them a call at  240-773-5050
