Md. bill aims to take sugary drinks off the table

WASHINGTON — Parents are tired of being the bad guy — and Robi Rawl, executive director with the group Sugar Free Kids, says that when restaurants bundle sugary drinks into meals for kids, they put parents in that position.

So Sugar Free Kids is pushing for a bill to change that.

The Healthy Kids’ Meal Bill would take sugary drinks off the table in kids’ meals and have restaurants provide water, low-fat milk or juice as the “default drink” in a kids’ meal.

Maryland lawmakers are considering twin bills (HB 1090 and SB 742) in Annapolis. The first of two public hearings will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. before the House Economic Matters Committee.
