Driver hits Maryland State Trooper on Howard Co. roadside

WASHINGTON — A Montgomery County driver struck a Maryland State Trooper who was helping a disabled car’s driver in Howard County Thursday.

Around 1:30 p.m., Maryland State Police say 31-year-old Rodney Irons of Silver Spring struck Trooper Tristen Phillip, who had pulled over to help someone whose car had broken down on southbound Interstate 95, north of Route 100 in Howard County.

Irons was driving without a driver’s license. He was transported by ambulance to Howard County General Hospital.

Police say charges against Irons are pending.

The impact injured Phillip, but authorities have not released information about the extent of his injuries.

Phillip, a 27-year-old two-year veteran of Maryland State Police, is assigned to patrol duties at the Waterloo Barrack.
