Maryland girl, 16, makes noise on ‘The Voice’

WASHINGTON — You’ve heard of Madonna and Rihanna, but here comes Treeva.

She’s the latest singer from the area to take her talents to national TV. Treeva Gibson, 16, of Frederick, Maryland, performed on this week’s season premiere of “The Voice” on NBC.

“The doors opened, I walked out there and I was just trying to think about not falling,” Gibson said in an official interview for the show.

“I got up there, I started singing and not too early into the song Blake and Christina turned around.”

She chose Christina Aguilera as her voice coach.

Gibson has mild hearing loss, and both of her parents are deaf.

“They didn’t listen to music, so it was like something I had to kind of figure out on my own.”

Gibson says after listening to a lot of music in recent years, she admires Amy Winehouse, Florence and the Machine and Lana Del Rey.

She sang “Young and Beautiful,” a song of Del Rey’s, during her audition on “The Voice.”

“It’s so ridiculous, in a good way, in the best way, that I’ve even made it here,” she says.
