Fairfax County medics deliver baby on Beltway

WASHINGTON — Fairfax County emergency responders are used to helping others — but crews weren’t expecting to assist in delivering a baby on the Capital Beltway early Friday morning.

“We got called to 495 just before Braddock [Road] for a person that was just about to give birth,” says Fairfax County Fire Medic Kyle Ballinger with fire station 423 in West Annandale.

A woman, whose name has not yet been released, went into labor and crews helped deliver the baby at about 3 a. m. The healthy baby girl was born on the Outer Loop of the Beltway just before the Gallows Road exit and close to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where the mother was headed to deliver.

Ballinger says he had never delivered a baby before, but it was a rewarding experience.

“It was neat, it’s what I got in the fire service for,” he says.
