WASHINGTON — Croatia fans packed Church Hall in Georgetown to watch their team take on France in the World Cup Final. Things didn’t work out like they’d hoped, but they certainly made the most out of the game.

There was authentic music, dancing, and even the Croatian ambassador. Fans who didn’t have their own gear could buy T-shirts as well.

“It started at a small event with Nigeria,” said Igor Boras, one of the organizers, “and it just grew out as the team started doing better.”

“We’re so happy to have so many Croats here in the same place, and so many of our American friends here to cheer on the team,” said Boras.

Getting in was tough. While the event was free and open to the public, people lined up as early as 9 a.m. to get in. Church Hall opened its doors at 10 a.m., and by 10:15 a.m., they had already filled to capacity. Many fans left the line in frustration, but those who stayed loved the experience.

“It took a while to get in, but it was great once we were in here,” said Jerry, who donned a Croatian flag as a cape while watching the match.

While France won 4-2, fans stood and applauded their team as the final seconds wound down. Fans left with their spirits high, happy to be able to watch their team compete in its first-ever World Cup Final.

“I mean, it would’ve been amazing to win it,” said Alex, who’s family is from Croatia, “But second place, it’s pretty good.”

“Four years from now we’re going to win it, but for now, very good,” he said.
