National Zoo panda recovers after getting sick

WASHINGTON — Zookeepers are keeping a close eye on giant panda Bei Bei Tuesday after he got sick overnight.

Bei Bei was unsettled and experienced some nausea Monday night into Tuesday morning, the National Zoo said. Zoo staff monitored him overnight and veterinarians determined Tuesday morning that he appears to be “perfectly fine.”

“He is eating well and nothing unusual was found in his habitat,” the zoo said in a release.

In November, Bei Bei underwent a lifesaving surgery to remove a lemon-sized mass of bamboo that blocked the cub’s intestine. Zookeepers noticed something was wrong on Thanksgiving morning when Bei Bei seemed lethargic and vomited twice.
