WASHINGTON (AP) — Two people were found dead inside a car that plunged into the Potomac River on Saturday.
The car was found in the water near the Roosevelt Bridge early Sunday.
The U.S. Park Police says the vehicle was traveling north on Ohio Drive near Parkway Drive when it left the roadway.
One passenger was able to swim ashore and alert authorities. That occupant was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The driver and another passenger were found dead in the vehicle, according to U.S. Park Police.
The car went into the water at around 10:50 p.m. Saturday.
Emergency responders from D.C. police, Park police and the U.S. Coast Guard, with fire boats from D.C. and Alexandria, scoured the water for the car and the bodies for hours.
The car and was located at around 1 a.m. A cadaver dog from Fairfax County, Virginia discovered the bodies.
Police are investigating what caused the car to plunge into the river. The causes of death are still being investigated.
