DC police announce arrests in multiple cases

WASHINGTON — D.C. police have a man in custody in the brazen daylight shooting of four people last week on North Capitol Street at New York Avenue.

Kevin Antonio Cole, 26, of Southeast D.C. is charged with assault with intent to kill in the June 8 incident that happened at about 4:23 p.m.

“This first arrest is a good step in the right direction, but it doesn’t end this investigation — we still have work to do,” Police Chief Cathy Lanier said at a Thursday news conference. “We are still looking for at least one other person”

Police believe Cole was the get-away driver. They’re still trying to identify and find the shooter.

The most seriously wounded person in the shooting remains hospitalized. The bicycle patrol officer who was bumped off his bike by a car while responding to the shooting is said to be doing “well.”

Cole’s arrest was made possible Lanier said, because of images from private and business surveillance cameras and tips from the community.

“We’re hoping we can get some additional tips from the community,” Lanier said.

During the news conference at D.C. Police headquarters Lanier also announced the arrest of a teenager in a Feb. 19 murder in the 1800 block of Benning Road Northeast.

Kenneth Adams, 18, of Northeast D.C. is charged with first-degree murder while armed in the death of Dante Kinard, 21, of Northeast D.C.

“Commend people in the community in that case who came forward to provide information to us,” Lanier said.

A suspect who is as yet unidentified by police also is in custody after a spree of armed robberies Monday night into Tuesday morning.

“We’re pretty confident that he was involved in up to seven different robberies,” Lanier said.

On Wednesday, police arrested a suspect in a May 22 carjacking in which two people were shot. That happened in the 3500 block of East Capitol Street, Northeast at approximately 4:23 a.m.

D’Andre Barksdale, 27, of Southeast is charged with armed carjacking.

There’s a reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction of anyone involved in a city shooting. Tips can be called in to 202-727-9099, or sent to the TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411.
