DC offers to help pay for surveillance cameras

WASHINGTON — D.C. police say surveillance video helped track down the man now charged in last week’s quadruple shooting on North Capitol Street — and they say they wish more people had security cameras.

“We have made a lot of progress in bringing people to justice in this city when it comes to violent crime,” said D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier. “And all of that progress is because we have people who work with police and provide information.”

Up to five cameras on residences and businesses captured images of the North Capitol Street shooting incident.

“This case from North Capitol Street is a perfect example where those cameras can be extremely useful to us,” Lanier said.

A city incentive program to install surveillance will rebate up to $500 of camera costs to residents and up to $750 to nonprofits, religious institutions and businesses.

The Security Camera System Incentive Program was initiated by the D.C. Council earlier this year with a limited pool of resources.

“Our security camera program continues to have funds available and we want people to call us,” D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said Thursday. “So, if we have [an] incident we can make a swift arrest.”
