Fitness trainers may dodge new standards

WASHINGTON — Personal fitness trainers in D.C. might feel like busting a move. It appears the D.C. Council may back off regulating the trade.

Through the summer, D.C. appeared to be headed toward becoming the first place in the country to regulate personal fitness trainers.

But D.C. Council member Jack Evans, Ward 2, has introduced a bill to shelve new rules for fitness buffs.

“It’s a profession where people can get into easily now, and if we were to put regulations in place, it would really restrict the ability of people to operate,” he says.

“It would really put people out of business.”

He calls regulations “overreaching” on the part of government and says people have been stopping him regularly to vent about new standards for personal trainers.

A regulatory panel, called the Board of Physical Therapy, has been working up standards for personal fitness trainers.

But six co-sponsors joined Evans on the bill, giving him an early majority support on the council to stop regulations.

Supporters say they believe standards could help improve safety by weeding out the phonies.
