Drivers paying more to take the Dulles Toll Road

WASHINGTON – Drivers are paying 24 percent more than last year to travel on the Dulles Toll Road, according to Toll Road News.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which operates the toll road, is on track to collect $125 million in tolls by the year’s end.

The toll is $1.75 for cars crossing the main toll plaza near Tysons Corner — that is an increase from 17 cents a mile to 21 cents per mile, which took effect in January.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority’s strong revenue is because of the toll increase and the willingness to pay from motorists in Virginia’s relatively affluent Fairfax and Loudoun counties, according to the report.

And Toll Roads News reports traffic on the road was down a bit when the toll increased and stayed that way through March. But in April, the traffic volume increased again.

The airports authority is using the toll money to help pay for constructing the new Silver Line, which will connect Metro riders with Dulles International Airport.

Next year drivers will pay 75 cents more — $2.50 — to use the toll road if they enter at the main toll plaza.
