Md. family adopts ‘Pet of the Week’ just in time for Christmas

WASHINGTON – A family in Columbia, Md., has a new addition to their family just in time for Christmas morning — an adorable dog named Waffles.

Waffles was featured just last week on WTOP’s Pet of the Week segment.

Julie Neal saw a picture of Waffles online and called her husband, Mark, to tell him she just had to him have him.

The couple woke up the next morning and went to the Washington Animal Rescue League. They both fell in love with Waffles and decided that he would be the perfect Christmas surprise for their two boys.

When the Neals adopted Waffles, they sent him to live with their a family relative to keep it a surprise.

“We established a code of silence with all the adults and only told a few close friends,” Mark explains.

Waffles arrived at the Neal home this morning and was waiting under the tree when the boys woke up.

“Both of my boys were completely surprised,” Julie says. “They told me they had no idea it was coming.”
