Thanksgiving road trip could cost more than last year

WASHINGTON – The cost of filling the tank for that Thanksgiving trip is going to vary quite a bit depending on where your are going along the eastern seaboard.

Prices in the D.C. metro region and around the country are about the same as last Thanksgiving, but much higher in areas affected by Superstorm Sandy.

Unleaded regular dropped five cents to $3.41 a gallon in the D.C. metro region in the last week. Last year at this time unleaded regular it was $3.38.

AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesman Lon Anderson says prices are even lower the further you get from D.C. He’s seen it as low as $3.08 a gallon in some rural and southern parts of Virginia.

The big exception to lower prices is to the north hit by superstorm Sandy three weeks ago.

“In certain parts of New Jersey they’re among the highest in the country, and that’s directly because of the damage done by Sandy,” says Anderson.

He adds that there are still some spot shortages of gasoline in New Jersey and New York, but you will be able to find gas.

The average in and around New York City is $3.93 a gallon while the average near Asbury Park, N.J. is $3.53 a gallon.

Gas prices nationwide have dropped 44 cents a gallon since the peak of $3.87 on Sept. 14.
