Super Bowl safety scores refunds for jewelry customers

WASHINGTON–The Super Bowl disappointed many fans this year, except those in Gardendale, Ala., who purchased jewelry from Jeff Dennis Jewelers during the past two weeks.

The local jewelry store promised these customers cash refunds if either the Denver Broncos or the Seattle Seahawks scored a safety during the game, according to the Alabama blog AL.com.

The odds were 7 to 1, according to SportsBetting.com, but it happened just 12 seconds after the opening kickoff. The Seahawks’ safety is the sixth to occur in Super Bowl history.

Dennis’ customers will receive close to $70,000 in refunds, but his insurance company, Lloyd’s of London, will foot the bill. They also had to pay for $55,000 in refunds in November 2012, when Dennis promised refunds if the Iron Bowl ended in a shutout, and almost $90,000 Labor Day last year for a similar promotion when it rained more than an inch.

Almost 400 customers will get refunds, ranging from $30 to $6,000, and will get to keep their jewelry. During the past two promotions, most customers spent that in store. So Dennis is just as excited as his customers are about the refunds, or at least the increase in publicity.
