Google debuts same-day delivery in Washington

Need something now, but don’t have time to go shopping? Google to the rescue, if you live in Washington, D.C. The Internet search giant announced Tuesday it had expanded its same-day delivery service — launched one year ago in Northern California with the delivery of a box of granola — to Washington, Boston and Chicago.

Google Express, the new, truncated moniker for the service first called Google Shopping Express, promises same-day delivery to D.C. residents from nine retailers — including Costco and Giant Food — provided the order is for more than $15. The other seven retailers available to Washington shoppers are Staples, Walgreens, Sports Authority, Barnes & Noble, L’Occitane, Toys R Us and Guitar Center.

Membership costs $95 per year or $10 per month. Or you can choose to pay as you go, at $4.99 per eligible order.

In order to entice new customers, Google is offering new customers the first three months of membership for free.
