Aquarium considers whether to keep dolphin exhibit

BALTIMORE (AP) — The National Aquarium in Baltimore is considering whether to continue exhibiting dolphins.

Officials said Wednesday that they are exploring options for providing the best environment for the dolphins, taking into account emerging science and knowledge of the eight dolphins in their care.

A dolphin summit is planned at the aquarium this month to bring together experts who can determine the feasibility of various solutions, including an ocean-side dolphin sanctuary.

The aquarium is also looking at reimagining the National Aquarium experience, a new role in the nation’s capital and the future role of aquariums worldwide. Aquarium CEO John Racanelli says they are embracing changes to stay relevant to audiences in the next 30 years.
