D.C. area gas prices jump 8 cents in past week

WASHINGTON – The price at the pump has gone up for the fifth week in a row — both in the D.C. area and across the country.

Prices went up 8 cents in the Washington region to an average $3.59 for a gallon of regular gasoline, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic’s weekly survey. Nationwide prices climbed 12 cents to $3.61 a gallon.

Prices usually go down this time of year. AAA says prices in August have declined 7 out of the previous 10 years. Prices are still lower than they were a a year ago.

The auto club expects gas prices to drop this fall.
