Airports Authority calling special session

WASHINGTON – In the face of intense pressure, the group building the massive Metro extension to Dulles International Airport may be about to make a major concession.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is calling a special session in the coming weeks to talk about the contract for Phase 2 of the project, the subway section planned from Reston to the airport that would continue into Loudoun County.

Phase 1 of the Silver Line is under construction. It will extend Metro service from East Falls Church through Tysons Corner and out to Wiehle Avenue in Reston. It’s expected to open next year.

Specifically, the organization wants to iron out issues with the much talked about union-friendly project labor agreement.

Virginia officials say they’ll have a tough time giving any more money to the project if that agreement stays in place.

Virginia is a right-to-work state, and Loudoun County leaders also aren’t happy with the authority’s preference for union labor.
