DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — An international human rights group says fighters on both sides of the conflict in Central African Republic are escaping prosecution for war crimes.
In a report released Thursday, Amnesty International said that the country’s transitional authorities have failed to pursue cases even when the crimes have been captured on film.
The report said that in some cases public officials have failed to take action because they fear retaliation from armed groups.
Central African Republic’s sole functioning prison also has seen three jail breaks this year.
Thousands have been killed since the country’s political crisis deepened in December 2013 and ignited unprecedented violence between Christians and Muslims.
Christian Mukosa, Amnesty International’s Central African Republic researcher, said the cycle of violence can only be stemmed by ending impunity.
