WASHINGTON - The lunar year 4711 will mark the year of the Snake. Occupying the 6th position in the Chinese Zodiac, the snake symbolizes such character traits as intelligence, gracefulness and materialism.
Here are some places around town to celebrate:
On Feb.10, the Chinese community of the greater Washington metropolitan area celebrates the "Chinese Lunar New Year 4711″ in D.C.'s Chinatown. Join the more than 40,000 people who are expected to come downtown to watch the parade of floats, Chinese dragons and firecrackers. The celebratory parade will start at 6th and I Street, NW and make its way to 6th and H Street, NW. (Washington, D.C., Chinatown. Feb. 10 at 2 p.m.)
Two Weeks of Dumplings
The Source is giving the Year of the Snake a two-week celebration. The fun will start on Feb. 9 for a dumpling cooking class hosted by Executive Chef Scott Drewno. Master Chef Wolfgang Puck is hosting a six-course Chinese New Year celebration dinner Feb. 11, but with tickets sold out, The Source is offering a dim sum reception with dumplings and sparkling wine so more people can join in the festivities. In addition to the fabulous events taking place, The Source will be offering a special "Year of the Snake" tasting menu for the duration of the two-week Chinese New Year. The Original Sin
Ping Pong Dim Sum is celebrating the Chinese New Year with the Seven days of Snake Sins. Starting on Feb. 10 there will be different specials celebrating the seven sins: gluttony, pride, sloth, rage, lust, greed and envy. Following the seven days of sin, Ping Pong Dim Sum gives guests the chance at good fortune and wealth with the 8 Days of Luck promotion.
