WTOP News Announces New Morning Anchor Team

Washington, D.C. – January 3, 2022 – On Monday, January 2, 2023, WTOP News debuted its new morning drive anchor team. Michelle Basch and John Aaron, two familiar WTOP voices, will now be gracing the airwaves together from 5-10 a.m., Monday through Friday, on WTOP.

Michelle Basch joined WTOP in 2006 as a reporter. Prior to taking on her new role in morning drive, Michelle co-anchored evenings on WTOP with Dimitri Sotis. A Cleveland native, Michelle started her career in news radio in Charleston, SC, she’s also worked in Cleveland and Los Angeles.

“After years of working as part of WTOP’s wonderful night crew, I am so lucky to get the opportunity to help Washingtonians wake up and get informed every weekday morning,” said Basch. “The fact that I’m teaming up with John – a really nice guy whose work I’ve always admired – makes it even more exciting!”

John Aaron began his career at WTOP in 2007. Since joining the WTOP team, John has served as both a reporter and weekend anchor. Listeners have also heard John fill-in frequently for former AM Drive hosts Bruce Alan and Joan Jones, who left WTOP at the end of 2022 via a voluntary buyout. John started his broadcast career in Gettysburg, PA, before coming home to D.C.

“It’s truly surreal to now be anchoring weekday mornings for the station I grew up listening to,” said Aaron. “I look forward to spending more mornings with our listeners, bringing them the important news of the day and having some fun along the way.”

WTOP Director of News and Programming, Julia Ziegler, also shared her thoughts on the new morning team.

“Michelle and John bring years of experience and incredible news judgment to mornings,” said Ziegler. “They are both so excited to bring their passion for news to morning drive. Our listeners are in good hands with John and Michelle.”
