WASHINGTON — In what has been a rough Monday for the Washington Nationals, pitcher Jordan Zimmermann is saying goodbye to the team that drafted him.
He’s opting for free agency after seven years in the nation’s capital.
“It’s difficult putting into the words the feelings of appreciation I have for the love and support I’ve felt,” Zimmermann said in a statement via his agent. “Although I may no longer wear the curly W on my head or my chest, Nationals fans always will be in my heart.”
Zimmermann went 13-10 this season with an ERA of 3.66 in 201 innings pitched.
Earlier on Monday, the Nats fired manager Matt Williams and the entire coaching staff. The season ended on a bad note. Pitcher Jonathan Papelbon was suspended the last four games of the year for choking star Bryce Harper during a game.
