Redskins face familiar opportunity vs. Giants

WASHINGTON — The Redskins head into Thursday night’s game with the New York Giants in a similar position they were in a year ago, at 1-1 heading into back-to-back matchups with NFC East foes. A year ago they went to Philly and lost a tough game by three only to return home and play the Giants the next Thursday. The Redskins lost that game 45-14, as Kirk Cousins threw four interceptions.

“I think it was a tough one,” Cousins said. “I hadn’t really thrown four interceptions in a game before, that I could remember. It was a first-time experience for me. It was frustrating and difficult facing adversity, and ultimately I believe it’s made me stronger as a quarterback, as a player, as a person.”

Cousins has shown progress this year as has the entire offense, especially the running game. Matt Jones ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns last week, which is exactly what the Redskins need to do on Thursday and every game from here on out. It’s no secret that they want to run the ball, especially with the ability to change backs constantly and keep them fresh.

The first two weeks, the Redskins offensive line faced a pretty good challenge, but this week could be the toughest. They are facing a defensive unit that allows only 3.0 yards per carry and 68 rushing yards a game. Jay Gruden must stick with the run and not give up on it if it’s not working.

We will get a chance to see the full defensive secondary on the field for the first time all year with Chris Culliver returning from suspension. Bashaud Breeland returned last week, so now everyone is in place.

The team released David Amerson this week after not playing any snaps on defense last week and after having a rough Week 1. This was after releasing Kai Forbath last week. One thing is for certain in this early season — Scot McCloughan and Jay Gruden aren’t messing around. They need people that are doing their jobs; if not, then they will find someone who will. This is all part of changing the culture. Will it continue? Nobody knows, but they are off to a good start.

As for this week, it’s another chance to show people that this team might be turning the corner. It’s always tough to play on a short week, but the locker room believes that things are different. Cousins and the team realize what’s at stake.

“We’re excited,” he said. “You know, we’re 1-1 with a chance to go 2-1; a chance to take a step forward in our division; a chance to get a win against a division rival on the road. What a great opportunity, great challenge.”

Injury report

The Redskins have ruled cornerback Justin Rogers out this week, along with wide receiver DeSean Jackson. Linebacker Perry Riley (calf) and tackle Tom Compton (calf) are questionable.

A couple key players are out for the Giants as well. Cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (concussion) and wide receiver Victor Cruz (calf) will not play.
