WASHINGTON — A day after recording his 50th goal of the season, Alex Ovechkin officially locked up another goal-scoring title as the NHL regular season concluded Sunday.
Ovechkin finished the year with 50 goals in 79 games, earning his sixth career Rocket Richard Trophy and his fourth in as many seasons. Ovechkin is the first player to lead the NHL in goals in four straight seasons since Wayne Gretzky from 1981-85.
Ovechkin was one four regulars to sit as a healthy scratch in Washington’s regular-season finale, but his 50 goals on the year were four clear of Chicago’s Patrick Kane.
On Saturday, Ovechkin joined Gretzky and Mike Bossy as the only players in NHL history with at least seven career 50-goal seasons. On Sunday, Ovechkin joined Bobby Hull and Phil Esposito as the only players to the lead in goals at least six times since 1943-44.
Ovechkin also became the first player in NHL history to lead the league in power play goals four straight seasons.
