A decade ago, Amazon.com Inc. barely registered as a regional employer. Today, it’s nearing the top of the charts, at least in Virginia.
Between Amazon fulfillment, Amazon Web Services and Amazon’s second headquarters, Seattle-based Amazon has emerged as a fairly indispensable component of the regional economy. Its rise in Virginia comes as Amazon prepares for a mass corporate return-to-the-office on Jan. 2, five days a week, which landlords hope will drive a return-to-work trend — if it doesn’t drive an employee exodus first.
Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) spokespeople did not immediately respond to a request for comment on its regional employment growth or its plans to continue growing. According to its 2024 community impact report for the National Capital Region, Amazon employs more than 61,000 across Virginia, Maryland and D.C.
